Coal TestingWallace Hardgrove Coal Grinder - G1
IntroductionThe machine measures the grindability of coal which is to be used for producing pulverized fuel. A known weight of coal is inserted into the 'bowl' of the machine and is subjected to a grinding action by means of steel balls under a known load for a predetermined number of revolutions. The resultant powder is then graded to measure the extent of pulverisation. The 'bowl', or container, is a unit complete with the pestel and balls and this can be removed from the machine for filling and emptying. The base or 'grinding area' of the bowl is detachable. ProcedureThe machine is simple and convenient to use. The loaded bowl is placed on the bed of the machine and can then be pushed right home ready to be finally located and locked in its working position. A lever is then pulled which lifts the bowl and locates it correctly in its station and presses it firmly against a rubber gasket which seals it effectively. Lever is the moved which engages the drive with the pestel and also applies the required load of 29 kg. Two buttons are pressed which cause the pestel to be rotated at approx 20 r.p.m. for exactly 60 revolutions, the machine then stops automatically. The operating procedure is reversed to remove the bowl for examination of the contents. The drive is from 1/8 h.p. geared, braked, electric motor which gives a final shaft speed of 90 r.p.m. The brake is electrically operated and brings the mechanism to rest comfortably with the 1/4 revolution tolerance when the 60 turns is complete, the bowl is marked for this purpose.
